Bird on a Wire

A week ago, I made a friend
He was sitting at the end
Of my gravel driveway 
He looked at me; I looked at him 

He lingered there and did not speak
Could be he had had a week
Something said he needed help
Perhaps the way he moved his beak 

He opened it and froze
Cocked his head, don’t really know
Are you hungry, are you thirsty?
Would you join me for a cup of tea?

Don’t know why that thought came to me
I’m rational — most usually
Decided I would go inside
Bring back my crow a nice surprise

Popcorn was my offering
The bird had flown up on a limb
Perched high on a maple tree
I knew that he was watching me

Set some kernels on a rock
Walked to my porch, glanced at my watch 
He swooped down in a minute
and ate till he was finished

Somewhere I read in a book
a crow will use his time 
To soar over the countryside,
searching far and wide 

For something that will catch his eye
A shiny object, by and by
A gift on summer winds
to reward a brand new friend 

I kept the popcorn in my truck 
Yesterday, I was in luck
As I pulled up the drive
There he was, up on the line

I set a handful on the rock
Looked at the ground and I did spot 
A pretty shiny feather
and a rose petal together 

I went to pick them up 
and the crow started to caw
I waved my feather, said my thanks 
My buddy looked at me and winked
